Written by Bob Couttie

Bosun Jack was dead. His body lay under the worklights beside a pool of blood. The instrument of his death was a short distance away. One thing is certain, his killer still hunts seafarers.

The Case of Bosun’s Crush

MAC Takes On The Boatswain's Killer
On the evening of January 11, 2007, a boatswain died aboard a cargo ship docked at Tauranga, New Zealand. In its latest episode Maritime Accident Casebook looks for his killer, one that hunts seafarers on every ship.
Deaths like those of 'Bosun Jack' account for a third of all avoidable seafarer fatalities aboard ship. Maritime Accident Casebook, MAC,devotes its latest episode, The Case Of The Bosun's Crush to lessons that seafarers can learn from how he died and avoid the same mistakes themselves.
Maritime Accident Case is a unique voluntary, free resource that aims to empower seafarers through knowledge to keep their lives and their ships safe. Launched in mid-June 2007, Maritime Accident Casebook presents real-life lessons to enhance seafarer safety awareness in an accessible and entertaining way.
Since it's launch, MAC has achieved a high level of credibility among maritime accident investigators, professional mariners and those with responsibility for maritime safety/accident education and training.
Each episode consists of an audio podcast that can be downloaded and played on any computer, MP3 player or MP3-capable cellphone and listened to at leisure and distributed freely. Each podcast is coupled with an illustrated online edited transcript and links to official reports. Seafarers are encouraged to distribute and discuss each episode with their fellow crewmembers and become pro-active in maritime safety and discuss safety issues on the website blog.
Previous Maritime Accident Casebook episodes cover fatigue (The Case Of The Cozy Captain), safety entry procedures (The Case Of The Silent Assassin), navigation (The Case Of The Wandering Monarch), lifeboat safety (The Case Of The Deadly Saviour), and safe anchoring in typhoons (The Case Of The Errant Hookers). Future episodes will continue to cover critical safety and security issues including piracy.
Maritime Accident Safety Casebook is online at http://maritimeaccident.wordpress.com. Podcasts are alkso available at maritimeaccident.mypodcast.com.

Podcasts are currently available in audio only, for reasons given in the website's FAQ: to reduce bandwidth – an issue given the expense of ship-based access to the internet, because audio MP3 players significantly outnumber video-capable players and because audio can be listened to almost anywhere in the same way music can.
