Alternative Therapies gain popularity in UK

A FORMER CIVIL SERVANT has decided to turn her hands to healing. 42 year old alternative therapy entrepreneur Angela Palmer of Middlesbrough is using her skills by setting up business at Hairascope Salon in Redcar. As more people turn to alternative therapies, more specialists are required to meet public demand. Angela who is married to Gary with son’s Chris, 21 and Jamie, 17, decided to take the plunge to set up in business after many years of contemplation. Trained in acrylic sculptured nails and manicure, this is her first step on the road to business success.  Angela said: “I trained in acrylic sculptured nails and manicure in 2002 and this was my first step on the road to beauty. However, as I had two children, a home and husband to look after, not to mention bills to pay, I did not take this any further. “Whilst working for the Civil Service, a colleague’s daughter gave a short session in Indian head massage that I thoroughly enjoyed. That was my first experience of alternative therapies. I then went on holiday to Lanzarote a couple of years later and had a reiki treatment and that was it. I was hooked and imagined how nice it would be to do something that you enjoyed for a living rather that something that you had to do to pay the bills.” So much has the UK boom for such therapies expanded, aromatherapy, homoeopathy and other popular complementary therapies are to be regulated for the first time under a government-backed scheme to be established this year. Millions of Britons currently spend £130 million a year on complementary treatments and it is estimated that this will reach £200 million over the next four years. Among the practices to be covered by the scheme would be aromatherapy, reflexology, massage, nutrition, shiatzu, reiki, naturopathy, yoga, homoeopathy, cranial osteopathy and the Alexander and Bowen techniques.  The new Natural Healthcare Council which is being backed by the Prince of Wales, will be able to strike off errant or incompetent practitioners. It will also set minimum standards for practitioners to ensure that therapists are properly qualified.  Patients will be able to complain to the council about practitioners and the new body will be modelled on the General Medical Council and other similar statutory bodies.  More and more consumers are also increasingly turning to alternative remedies to complement more conventional medicine. One theory is that consumers are choosing more and more to take responsibility for their own health and well-being. The NHS spends £50 million a year on complementary therapies. At the same time, people are becoming increasingly health-conscious.  Angela added: “I believe these prices will make it affordable for everyone to feel good on the inside as well as look good on the outside and not have to make an either or decision with regards to cost. Hopefully this will enable more people to enjoy both and make time for themselves in their busy lives because everyone deserves a little ‘me time’. " “Over the years I have worked for various employers, like many working parents - always doing whatever was needed to pay the bills. As my children got older, I was always looking for something new to do.”  Contact:  Healing Hands @ Hairascope, 54a Station Road, Queen Street, Redcar (above Williams Estate Agents). Tel:   01642 756410Mob: 07850521688  Notes to the Editor:Media Link Tees Valley, based in Redcar, is a Press Release Writing ServcieMLTV is the only Press Release Service in Redcar offering local  businesses a close link for their advertising needs.Every release written and distributed by MLTV follows the Editorial Code of Practice news guidelines.  *ENDS* Issued by David Honeywell– Media Link Tees ValleyTelephone: 01642 758386E-mail: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
