One of coastal voyage operator Hurtigruten's newest cruise ships, the ms Fram has collided with an iceberg near Brown's Bluff at the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. The collision occurred when the engines of the ship stopped causing the 12,700 ton Fram to slowly drift into the iceberg. No significant damage was done and, after managing to restart the engines, the ship's captain headed for King George Island which has a ship repair facility. A lifeboat was badly damaged and railings were bent but the engine problem is the main issue at this stage according to Hurtigruten spokesman Elliot Gillies. Until the full damage can be assessed it is not clear whether the 1 year old, 318 passenger ship can continue its cruise which started on 23rd December. |
