Drivers looking to avoid a car insurance claim this winter might want to heed the advice of a tyre safety firm. According to TyreSafe, many Britons will fail to pay proper attention to their tyres over the coming weeks, despite forecasts of snow and the recent blanketing of some parts of the country. It cites findings by car supermarket Motorpoint as showing that half of drivers do not regularly check their tyre pressure, while one-third are unaware of the depth of their tread. This is in addition to the earlier discovery by car maker Kia that a third of drivers fail to check their tyre tread each month during winter. Tyres which are severely deflated pose a dangerous risk, especially in icy conditions, the company suggests, adding that it is just as important to keep tread depth to a legal level so that the car's wheels grip the road properly. Commenting on the Motorpoint findings, Tyresafe said that the results were cause for concern as they highlighted how unprepared drivers are for winter weather, which could result in them needing to make a car insurance claim. "With snow and ice forecast to hit the country's roads in during the next few days, we strongly advise that motorists pay even greater attention to the condition of their tyres and find out their manufacturer recommended pressures if they are unsure," it added. The government suggests that drivers with faulty tyres could also find themselves liable for penalty points and a fine. Looking for a cheap car insurance quote? try Budget Insurance. |
