PDA Joins National Task Force on Apprenticeships
Written by Shepherd PR

The Painting and Decorating Association (PDA) has joined a cross-industry national task force, set up to try and address the apprenticeship crisis in the construction industry.

PDA member Windsor Powell is the trade body’s representative on the Cross Industry Apprenticeships Task Force. He joins key figures from Government departments, employer and federation representatives, union officials and the Learning and Skills Council to look into why construction companies are failing to train enough apprentices at a time when the UK faces a massive demand for skilled workers. More than 30,000 young people applied for construction industry apprenticeships in 2007, but only 5,500 suitable places were offered by employers. The task force, supported by ConstructionSkills, aims to double the number of apprenticeships offered over the next four years. Extra apprentices are needed as around 7,500 projects are set to start over the next five years on top of current schemes and general maintenance work.  At the first meeting of the panel, Windsor raised questions over the balance of training. He said: “Time spent learning management and supervisory techniques is squeezing the amount of time left to learn essential skills of the trade. “This annoys both young people and firms because both want apprentices to be fully trained from their course and ready to work. “We need to look closely at the content of the current NVQ system and make changes to ensure it is a relevant qualification for the demands of the painting and decorating industry. “Being on the task force gives us an influential voice to start pressing for such changes.” Ends The Painting and Decorating Association, which has its headquarters in Nuneaton, was established in July 2002, following a merger of the British Decorators’ Association and the Painting & Decorating Federation. The British Decorators’ Association was originally founded in 1894. The PDA is Britain's largest trade body, dedicated to the painting and decorating trade. Members include sole traders through to large-scale national contractors employing hundreds of operatives. Decorators looking to become members of the PDA are rigorously vetted prior to admission. Members are committed to the highest standards in health and safety practice, as well as training development. The PDA is proud of its long history and high standards, and a registered member can be relied upon to do a good professional job at a fair price.Press Release issued by Jane Shepherd, Shepherd PR Limited.Tel 01538 308685, mobile 07985 129315.Email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
