Magic of metaphor makes 2007 resolutions stick
Written by Judy

Leading coaches and consultants will be using a new approach to ensure their clients keep their New Year resolutions and reach the goals they dream of in 2007.

Called Clean Language, it's the opposite of the life coaching often seen on reality TV, with its well-meant advice which sometimes slides towards bullying.
A Clean coach pays extra-close attention to the metaphors a person uses when they speak and gesture, helping them to discover what they truly believe, and what really matters to them.
That helps the client to devise a New Year's resolution which comes from the heart – and a plan of action which fits perfectly with the reality of their life. And that means it actually happens!
How does it all work? Well, latest research in the world of cognitive science has revealed that metaphor is the very stuff of thought, perhaps even more fundamental than language.
It’s almost impossible to think without using metaphors, even about very basic concepts like time.  Are you ‘looking forward’ to the New Year, or ‘raking over’ the past? Our metaphors are so fundamental, we rarely notice them – and when we do, we often dismiss them as ‘just figures of speech’.
Because metaphors are at the heart of our thinking, changes that happen at a metaphoric level can have a spectacular impact on many different areas of a person's everyday life.
The carefully-devised set of questions used by Clean coaches avoid (as far as humanly possible) making assumptions or giving advice. That makes this process feel respectful rather than confrontational, so there's no need to waste energy on a battle of wills between client and coach.
If you're in the people-helping business, you can learn the basics of this process in a weekend, or follow a complete course leading to qualification as a Certified Clean Facilitator.
