On the 24th July, the All Party Parliamentary Group on Peak Oil and Gas will hold its first event on 24th July 2007 at 7.30pm in The Grimmond Room, Portcullis House, London. The event, titled ‘The Peaking of Global Oil Production’ is timely, with oil prices nearing record-highs and the IEA saying in its recent Medium Term Oil Market Report that "oil looks extremely tight in five years time" and there are "prospects of even tighter natural gas markets at the turn of the decade". While some may think this will be a temporary feature, others are pointing to analysis that these are simply further signals that we are approaching the global peak, and then decline, of oil supplies.
David Strahan, author of 'The Last Oil Shock' and board member of the Oil Depletion Analysis Centre, will present the reasons why there is fast growing concern that global oil production is reaching the peak. In his book, he describes the relationship between Peak Oil and Climate Change as, “Short fuse, Long fuse.” Peak Oil and Gas is an issue that has not received a significant level of open political discussion, but the recently formed All Party Parliamentary Group on Peak Oil and Gas, consisting of 25 MPs and 7 Peers, has now been formed to explore the issue. This event is open to all. It is a great opportunity to gain a valuable insight into an issue that is fast moving up agendas in all sectors, and some say will have an impact on all areas of society.
