Tuesday, 01 July 2008 - Minister of State and Clare T.D., Mr. Tony Killeen has confirmed that Clare County Fire and Rescue Service is to be provided with two new fire appliances, as well as funding for a new fire training centre in Ennis.
“I have been informed by Michael Kitt, T.D. Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, that Clare is to benefit significantly under the 2008 Fire Service Capital Programme”, he explained. Minister Killeen added, "In my previous role as Minister of State, with special responsibility for the fire service, I pushed hard to secure funding for the local fire and rescue service in Clare. Therefore, I am delighted that the Department has approved an application from Clare County Council for the development of the fire-training centre in Ennis. In addition, approval has been given for the allocation of two new fire appliances for the fire service in Clare County Council.” Commenting on the provision of the new training centre, which is estimated to cost in excess of EUR300k, the Junior Agriculture Minister stated, “The fire fighting capability of the local service will be greatly enhanced through the provision of this new centre. Once complete the stand-alone training unit will allow the Service to provide modern training facilities. It will complement existing training facilities at Ennis Fire Station and will also be used by other local authority fire services, as well as by Aer Rianta.” The Fire Services Capital Programme supports the fire authorities in the development and maintenance of a quality fire-fighting and rescue service. This multi-annual programme is designed to develop infrastructural support to fire authorities in putting modern and efficient fire services response capacity in place throughout the country. “Continued Government investment in the fire service is vital to ensure that communities have the necessary assurances of modern up to date facilities, which can also provide a safe place to work for our fire-fighters”, concluded Minister Killeen. -ENDS- Notes to Editor: - Tony Killeen T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (with special responsibility for Fisheries and Forestry), is available for interview and further comment on 0035387-2525304.
