Mayor Of Clare Welcomes Government Decision On Contentious Clare/Limerick Boundary Issue

County Clare, IRELAND, 19th September 07 - The Mayor of Clare warmly welcomed today’s news that County Clare is not going be affected by the proposed extension of Limerick City Council's boundary. Cllr. Patricia McCarthy was reacting to the announcement by John Gormley T.D., Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government that he intends to give effect to a limited extension of Limerick City Council’s boundary in the northern part of the city. "Today's announcement once and for all brings an end to what has been a very emotive issue for the people of Clare", stated Mayor McCarthy. She added, "In recent years, the proposed extension of the city's boundary into such County Clare suburbs of Limerick as Westbury, Parteen, Gillogue and Knockalisheen has been met with vigorous opposition by Clare County Council and the people of Southeast Clare. I am delighted that Minister Gormley has acknowledged our concerns and has now adopted and put into practice Mr. John Fitzgerald’s report on the matter." John Fitzgerald's Report, as adopted by Government in April, recommends, inter alia, a limited extension of Limerick City Council's boundary in the northern part of the city to facilitate intensive development and regeneration. This will involve the transfer to Limerick City Council of territory currently within the boundary of Limerick County Council, specifically the Limerick North Rural Electoral Division, which includes the suburb of Caherdavin, the Moyross estate and outlying agricultural land, with a total area of 1,429 hectares and a population of 7,248. According to Mayor McCarthy, "On behalf of Clare County Council and concerned residents of Clare, I am delighted that Minister Gormley has brought closure to this long-standing and politically sensitive issue. It should be noted that Clare County Council never objected to the intensive development and regeneration of the northern part of the city. Its primary involvement was to ensure that County Clare was not affected by any extension of the city's boundary.
