Gordon Brown rejected calls for a 50% super tax band on people having an income of more than £100,000.

London (Ask4loan) July 18, 2008: Downing Street today rejected calls for a 50% super tax band on people having an income of more than £100,000.

This puts an end to the debate between the ministers, Labour MPs and trade unions on the super tax band. As per the tax idea supporters, the taxes earned by the government treasury could have been used to help those who belong to the low economic class and are suffering from the economic slowdown.

Chancellor Alistair Darling was not against having a debate on this issue but expressed that the chances of a change in the tax patterns are unlikely. The present tax slab of a basic tax rate of 20 percent and 40 percent for the top level income earners stays as before. This has led to an agitation from the ministers who view that people are raising their voices for a increased tax rate to help the bottom classes. Some of the ministers think that Brown must get 'bold' on this issue but some also think that taxing the rich heavily will be nothing but a 'political suicide'.

A meeting at the policy forum of Labour involving the Unions, including Unite, the GMB and Unison, and local Labour parties is scheduled for next week to step up the tax rate rise calls.
