Report from Synergyst Developments in the Renewable Energy Markets in BRIC (Status Report 2007)

It has long been acknowledged that the commercial opportunities in the so called 'BRIC' markets - Brazil, Russia, India and China - remain significant for energy players. However, new research highlights the fact that, while these opportunities are substantial, major challenges need to be overcome if these opportunities are to be successfully commercialized. Already, the BRIC markets are heavily intensive and voracious energy consumers. Despite accounting for just 9% of global GDP, the BRIC markets consume 27% of the world's primary energy, 17% of its oil, 19% of its gas demand and around half of global coal demand. With the continuous growth in energy demand, it is becoming increasingly clear that reliance on oil and coal as the principle source of energy is an unsustainable long term position. This has lead to a robust development and increasing adoption of renewable energy sources - solar power, wind power, hydroelectricity/micro hydro, biomass and biofuels for transportation – within these markets. The current report, Developments in the Renewable Energy Markets in BRIC undertakes a thorough analysis of the renewable energy markets in Brazil, Russia, India, and China. The report begins with an overview of the global energy industry looking at the rising energy consumption trend apparent everywhere, the world’s energy reserves, the future of world energy, among other points. Moving on to the BRIC countries, each country-wise analysis includes first and foremost an analysis of the energy industries in Brazil, Russia, India, and China, and an overview of the global renewable energy industry.

Report further analyzes each country separately and looks at the renewable resources available in that country, be it wind power, hydro power, or biofuels; the major players in the country’s renewable energy market; and significant ongoing or proposed projects. Regulatory framework governing renewable energy in all four countries are analyzed in-depth, along with a future outlook provided for each country. The report contains analysis of major players such as Kyocera, Petrobras, Hydro OGK, Iberdola Renovables, Viva Solar, Suzlon Energy, Vestas, Shell, Suntech Power, and many others.
