Quest For Local Food Champions Launched

The search is on for restaurants, pubs and hotels which provide their customers with home cooked locally produced food. A national database is being compiled so that the public can find places to eat out where over sixty-five percent of the ingredients have been locally sourced.

The database is being compiled by www.GreenFinder.co.uk, the website which helps people go green by providing information and advice on how to live an environmentally friendly lifestyle and contains a green pages style directory.

GreenFinder founder Kate Haines is keen to promote local food and hopes people will support those eateries which serve local and seasonal ingredients. She said”Choosing local food is not only better for the environment and your health it also boosts your local economy”

With the public being far more aware of environmental issues and familiar with the term  ‘food miles’ people will be able to opt for places to eat out in safe in the knowledge their food has not flown half way round the world before ending up on their plate. Food flown in from abroad often contains preservatives to keep it looking fresh and is often over packaged to protect it on its lengthy journey.

The database is due to be published in July so the public can enjoy those long summer evenings sampling seasonal fare in their home towns. For those people holidaying in the U.K this year it is hoped they will go online and seek out those places listed and support local suppliers and restaurants.

If you can recommend a restaurant, pub, café or hotel or you own one which sources more than sixty-five percent of its food in the local area please email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
