This article is written to encourage cities to use wood fibre instead of burning of disposing of it.
.
. Every day, cities burn or dispose of wood mass unproductively. Wood waste they dispose of comes from many sources. Storms are a major source generating tons each year. Some cities are doing more than burning their wood waste. Options are being found. One company, Smurfit out of Newberg OR, utilizes wood waste to generate energy for its’ power plant. They are a paper producer. They accept wood waste from anyone in the area who generates it at no cost. They do require that the wood waste be brought to them. This saves both the cost of handling waste and the loss from the energy wood biomass can generate.. Ethanol production is another use of wood waste. Ethanol is considered a replacement to gasoline. The US Forest Service says 15% of the nations gasoline could be supplied by Ethanol from wood waste.. In Europe wood biomass is used to reduce carbon emissions. Wood burns with coal (co-firing) to work to create the reduction in green house gases. Both Europe and the US generate over 51% of all electric power with coal. This creates a huge market for wood waste.
Many cities do not have sources for disposing of wood to create energy available to them. Wood waste is handled through normal traditional channels of burning or disposal. There is a large demand for energy in our world. Having a way of capturing the energy from this waste is a huge help to today’s energy starved world.. One company Green Energy Resources , is helping with this effort. They are a environmental friendly company working to increase the use of wood biomass in power, steam and ethanol production to reduce the negative impact of coal and fossil fuels. Green Energy Resources is looking to use wood from wood waste streams, tree farms and storm damage. They have developed unique software and environmental certification system that is accepted by such states as New York. The certification system is known as the Urban Tree Certification.System. (UTCS). With this system, Green Energy Resources will track, maintain chain of custody documation and provide 3rd party verification. This inventory tracking system of wood waste for the US is Kyoto Compliant. This wood waste may then be available to those who currently are utilizing this energy source for co-firing or energy production. The inventory would entered by each city into the UTCS location. Those companies who utilize the energy will then be able to find sources that can be used efficiently. This will help identify and create value for this commodity. . Green Energy Resources realizes the potential of this waste. They currently have contracts to supply woodchips to Europe valued at millions of dollars. Joe Murray, president and CEO of Green Energy Resources offers the software program free of charge to cities. More information on this program may be found at www.utcs.com. Registering and using the system is free. Be a leader, join the biomass revolution in utilizing this waste
