When the response time requirements, size and budgets of your business change, so must your learning model. William Ward was part of the e-learning team who changed e-learning at Cable & Wireless to a rapid model. Now an independent consultant, he recently talked to Kineo about how rapid e-learning, including Kineo’s services, has delivered benefits at Cable & Wireless.
In Kineo’s latest podcast, William Ward, formerly Learning Technology Manager at Cable & Wireless, and now independent consultant, explains why Cable & Wireless moved into a rapid development model: “The key challenge with bespoke e-learning was that it took too long…with rapid development, the cost savings are significant, you’re not paying bespoke prices anymore. But even more important is the response time…the speed of implementation is amazing - you don’t have to wait three months or four months, with rapid development you can get stuff out in three weeks.” Ward agreed with Kineo’s view that while authoring tools are critical to achieving these benefits, the whole development process must be re-examined, including how you work with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs). A key benefit in Cable & Wireless of rapid development has been the involvement of SMEs more directly in the process, supported by the e-learning team. This can make SMEs your most powerful champions: “That part of the business owns the learning…they will encourage people to do it more than you ever could in L&D or HR, so it’s a real winner,” Ward explained. Of Kineo’s recent rapid e-learning work with Cable & Wireless, Ward described it as “Phase 2 of learning technology…it’s much more exciting [than catalogue driven content], much more into performance support and rapid development… …at the end of the day it’s about increasing performance, and what we need to do in the learning industry is learn how to use these tools in a constructive way. It’s the likes of Kineo, and there aren’t that many others out there, who can grab hold of these new tools, and nurture them in an organisation and get them embedded in the way of working and learning.” You can hear the podcast interview in full on Kineo’s website. Those interested in rapid e-learning need look no further than Kineo’s breakthrough new Rapid E-learning Service and its flagship Rapid E-learning Store. The store contains guides, resources, tools and templates to enable organisations to secure the benefits that Cable & Wireless and many others are obtaining through a rapid approach to learning. |
