Total enrollment for the six four-year schools was 99,924, up from 99,332 last fall.
More students are studying this fall at Washington's public four-year universities, thanks to such factors as larger freshmen classes, expanding branch campuses and better retention among upperclassmen, school officials said Tuesday. The University of Washington's enrollment figures showed a similar story in Seattle, with an increase in enrollment from 39,251 in fall 2005 to 39,524 this fall, said university registrar Todd Mildon. After several years of ups and downs, the UW Seattle freshman class grew significantly to 5,438, compared with 4,893 last fall. The number of both transfer students and high school graduates enrolling for the first time at the university increased this year. The University of Washington and Washington State University both got the go-ahead from the Legislature to educate freshmen and sophomores at branch campuses for the first time this year. Washington State University had 157 freshmen at its Vancouver, Wash., branch this fall. In contrast, the freshman head count in Pullman-Spokane was down by about 185, so freshmen enrollment was down overall at Washington State, said Vicki McCracken, WSU associate vice provost for enrollment. WSU's total student population is up for fall 2006: an increase of 98 students to a total fall enrollment of 23,428, including the branch campuses. WSU Vancouver gets most of the credit with its enrollment increase of 368 students. Central Washington University enrolled a record number of students for its sixth consecutive year, spokeswoman Becky Watson said Tuesday. Total enrollment of 9,636 full-time students reflected an increase of 238 from last fall. Watson credits an improving student retention rate - 83 percent of students continue their studies at Central - and the university's largest freshman class - 1,472 students - for the growing enrollment. Eastern Washington University had its 19th consecutive quarter of increased enrollment this fall, although its freshmen class did not grow, said university spokesman Anthony Sermonti. Total enrollment was 9,999 students, up 131 from last fall quarter's 9,868. Sermonti said student retention was a big factor in the growth as well as the larger freshmen classes over the past few years, which now make up larger sophomore and junior classes.
