Limerick County Council To Open Its Doors To Students

Dooradoyle, Limerick, 2nd November 07 - Secondary school students across County Limerick are being offered a unique opportunity to take a tour through the halls of Local Government power.  Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council, Cllr. Kevin Sheahan has written to the County's 21 Secondary School Principals inviting thousands of students to visit the offices of Limerick County Hall in Dooradoyle.

Cllr. Sheahan said the move is aimed at increasing awareness of the Local Authority's role in providing vital services in the community, as well as providing advice on careers within the Local Government System.

In his letter to Secondary School Principals, the Cathaoirleach said, "Any students who wish to tour our state-of-the-art building will learn more about what we do. I feel it is very important that students are made aware of the varied and far-reaching work that is carried out by the Council in their community, ranging from building houses and roads, providing water services and protecting the environment."

Cllr. Sheahan explained that students would also be provided with some advice on career opportunities within the Local Government system.

"Limerick County Council presently employs over 950 staff in various academic disciplines, including Engineering, Planning and Administration.  I feel the proposed tour would be of great assistance to students in Transition Year and 5th Year who are trying to choose a future career.  Being a father myself, I know how difficult it can be for them to make such a difficult decision at a very young age", added Cllr. Sheahan.

Designed by Architects Bucholz McEvoy and constructed by Sisk, Limerick County Hall gathers together nearly 300 local government officials working in nine departments that were previously scattered across several locations. In addition, the building provides a council chamber for 28 locally elected representatives. County Hall was officially opened in 2003.
