Excerpt from the book:  “One day the Garage Manager explained to Geoffrey what was going on at the railway station. Some railway enthusiasts and local people had bought part of the old line and were going to run steam trains on it just like in the old days. Geoffrey would be carrying very different passengers on Sundays from now on. His job in future would be to take people from the train to Birdland and also to the country park at Snoring-up-the-Valley. Birdland had opened two years ago and was very difficult for people without cars to get to. The country park was quite a long way away in the hills but more and more people were hearing about it and wanted to visit it.

So Geoffrey was going to link the railway to Birdland and the country park. He would take people to where the train couldn’t go. He was rather pleased that he could go anywhere and up into hills while trains had to stick to their tracks and couldn’t get up hills, well, not big ones anyway.

His first trip to Birdland was a disaster. He was supposed to follow the road next to the railway then go under a railway bridge. Geoffrey was a double decker and no one had checked if he could get under the bridge. He got stuck! Oh dear. Tender Terence dragged poor old Geoffrey back home and put him at the back of the garage. He was left there for a long time. Then Greasy Fitter’s ‘gang’ came and took his roof off, and his top windows, and then just left him again. Geoffrey was expecting to be broken up.”
