Cycone Funa Left The School Children Bereft
Written by Wendy Stenberg-Tends

Cycone Funa devastated far flung communities of Vanuatu. Government aid is not being given. Children and Teachers are left bereft at the start of the school year.

In spite of the Meteorological report saying Cyclone Funa would bypass them, the distant island communities in the far north of Vanuatu, were devastated.

Gone are many of their homes. Gone is their normal food supply of manioc, fruit trees and island vegetables. Drinking water contaminated by dirt and leaves. Windows from the school room blown in by driving wind and flying debris. Recently donated teacher’s resource books and exercise books, that were to be shared between three or more students, all destroyed by the rain. Pencils that were to be cut into three, all gone.

Diarrhorea and influenza  follow in the wake of Cyclone Fuma. Yet the government procrastinates as to whether it will pay out a mere $117,000 dollars to the stricken communities. Dependence on government assistance is not realistic.

YouMe Support Foundation has moved in and is appealing for urgently needed school supplies from the locals in Port Vila. They have sent food to some of the families and will send books, pens, pencils next week to the school, in an attempt to let the communities know they are not on their own.

YouMe Support Foundation in a world first, is raffling Seachange Lodge, in Port Vila, Vanuatu. Later this year a lucky person will own this boutique accommodation resort, that is absolute waterfront.

Funds from the raffle will provide non-repayable education grants to children from these stricken areas. Students who would never have an opportunity to go to High School.
