Cambridge, January 2008 – Lumie, the leaders in light therapy, have shown that Bodyclock dawn simulators helped a group of school students to wake up more easily, improved their mood and also had a positive impact on concentration and school marks.

A group of teenagers between the ages of 14 and 18 in the Science Club at King Edward VI school in Bury St Edmonds, trialled Lumie Bodyclock dawn simulators for 4 weeks. The results clearly demonstrated that using Lumie Bodyclock had a positive effect, making it easier to wake up and get to school on time and it even helped students to get to bed earlier before a school day. In addition, dawn simulation put them in a better mood in the morning as well as improved their mood throughout the day. Perhaps most importantly, the students felt that their concentration in class improved and some noticed an improvement in grades. This echoes research carried out by Dr Kohler, the Medical Director of the Florida Sleep Institute, who has found that good quality and quantity of sleep is necessary for optimal learning, a positive attitude towards education and a greater ability to interact socially with peers and teachers.

Lumie Bodyclock dawn simulators recreate a natural sunrise, resetting the internal body clock or circadian rhythm that's important in controlling sleep patterns. Research by Professor Russell Foster of Oxford University has shown that teenagers in particular suffer from delayed sleep phase syndrome, resulting in a late nights and difficulty waking properly in the morning. Those who do not have good quality or sufficient sleep are likely to have poorer grades and to suffer from a lack of concentration. Dawn simulation ensures that the body is not jolted awake by a harsh alarm but, instead, is woken gradually by light stimulating the pacemaker cells in the brain. This sets you up for the day, ensuring that you wake in a better mood and with more energy.

Lumie's Bodyclock range retails from £59.95 at stockists nationwide, including John Lewis (selected items) and Boots (selected items), and online at www.lumie.com.
