People could always be heard referring to events happening in this month as the result of ‘March Madness’, that saying has been replaced, people are now calling it ‘Miserable March’. DCM Money Solutions conducted a survey among people that phoned their debt helpline to see why they had waited until March to call for help. The top three reasons consumers gave for feeling particularly miserable at this time of year were:
  1. Credit and store cards won’t start chasing their debts aggressively until one or two reminders have been issued, so March is usually the first month consumers will get a final demand

  1. The budget is another reason cited for feeling so depressed at this time of year. Consumer finances are always given a squeeze in the chancellors speech and focuses consumers minds on personal finance issues

  1. The realisation that Council Tax and utility bills that are paid over a 10 month period are about to start again on 1 April

The survey has also dispelled the myth of the traditional man’s role of looking after the household finances and debt being the preserve of families on low incomes. John continued: “The traditional role with the man of the house taking care of the family finances is a thing of the past – these days about 58% of calls from people are women. We have also seen a year on year increase of 84% in the number calls from middle class professionals who are in a financial crisis.

Notes to editorsDCM Money Solutions is one of the UK’s leading debt management companies. The Nottingham based company was established by John Baird who was made bankrupt in 1991. John then faced the prospect of bankruptcy again in 1998 but successfully fought back and established DCM Money Solutions so that he could help people who are faced with the same situation. John Baird, Managing Director, DCM Money Solutions is available for interview.
