Broadband comparison broadband comparison site Broadband Genie welcomes news that from February 14th, broadband providers will have to provide MAC codes free and on request.

A MAC is a unique alphanumeric reference that enables customers to switch broadband provider smoothly and with minimal disruption. Without a MAC, customers can be left without broadband for some time while the transfer is made.

Up until now, providing a MAC code has been voluntary although most broadband providers have done so. But from Valentine’s Day all broadband providers are legally obliged to provide the code when asked after a ruling by Ofcom.

Broadband Genie CEO Philip Wilkinson says: “From Valentine’s Day switching broadband will be easier for consumers. This, in turn, will force broadband providers to raise their game as if they fail on service, customers will find it easier to change suppliers.”
