Research firm GfK reported this week that sales of prepay broadband dongles have risen to around 8,000 per week. The new figures announced by GfK show an increase of 7,000 per week compared to sales at the start of the year. In January approximately 1,000 mobile broadband dongles were sold per week. The new tally takes the total number of USB dongle sales up to around 30,000 for both prepay and contract devices. As the number of pre-pay USB mobile broadband dongles rise at a steep rate it is evident that more customers than ever wish to make use of mobile broadband services without the shackles of a long-term contract. However, as separate news indicates that the number of mobile broadband customers in the UK still only stands at around 6 per cent it is evident that a huge majority of the population still haven’t, as yet, discovered the benefits of pre-pay mobile broadband. So, if you’re aware of the principles of pre-pay mobile broadband but still don’t know how to go about getting connected what should you do, and more importantly, which service provider should you opt for? The first port of call is to check which service providers fall offer mobile broadband coverage for your area, or areas you think you will be visiting. You can do this by following the links provided in Mobile Broadband Genie’s list of providers to access the operator’s individual websites and check their most recent service coverage maps. The next step is to decide which service provider you want to buy a pre-pay mobile broadband dongle of. Luckily, the options aren’t as complex as you may think. Pay-as-you-go mobile broadband without any obligation or initial set-up fee is only really available from 3 Mobile at the moment. You need to pay for the broadband dongle (the USB stick which plugs into your laptop) and then you can choose your contract - the cheapest is no monthly fee using PAYG top-ups to manage your download allowance. Alternatively, you can go for a higher monthly free with inclusive dongle and downloads. Other “light use” mobile broadband packages are available from the likes of Vodafone, Orange and T-Mobile although these offer very short contracts for these you are obliged to pay out a fixed sum every month. The only exception to this rule is T-Mobile whose Web’n’Walk Plus Daily package doesn’t come with a minimum monthly price but whose set-up will set you back £99.99. Broadband dongles are self-installing so this means that you don’t have to worry about sussing out any installation software – you just plug it in and away you go. It couldn’t be simpler. The good news is that you don’t have to hunt high and low to get your no-contract pay-as-you-go dongle, and it could be yours within a matter of minutes. Gillian Nightingale, from Mobile Broadband Genie, explains: "You can now purchase your prepay dongle from a number of different outlets including your service provider’s high street store, online or through independent retailers like Woolworths, so there are plenty of different options available depending what suits you best.” For a full, detailed rundown of all Mobile Broadband service providers visit http://mobile.broadbandgenie.co.uk or alternatively, for extra help on signing up to a mobile broadband service and understanding the lingo log on http://www.broadbandgenie.co.uk/help.
