Changing Every Life in Scotland
Written by Iain Brown

Gillian Brown has a vision to change every life in Scotland for the better.  That is no mean feat, but a challenge she is well equipped for.  As the Coaching Director of New-U Coaching she talks about her own life changes, life coaching for young people, the corporate soul and leading yourself to personal success.  On June 21st she is holding her first “Breakthough” coaching workshop for those people with an interest in discovering more about themselves and more about coaching others.  Go to www.lifecoaching.eventbrite.com I had an amazing experience when I was first coached some 8 years ago.  I had been involved in training and knew a little about coaching, but I had reached a point in my life that I needed help to get through.   A friend had seen an article in a newspaper about coaching and suggested that I meet with a life coach.  I was nervous, a little hesitant and unsure, but I knew I could have done with a bit of support to help me overcome a distressing time. Little did I know the profound effect it would have on me.  Even now, over 10 years later, I still reflect on the amazing journey that I went through that brought me to where I am today.  Following my experience, my life changed dramatically and I started to plan what my future would hold.  I wanted to set up a coaching business that would change other people’s lives in the enormous way that mine was changed.  It was clear to me that people had a lot more potential to achieve extraordinary things if they could recognise what they were capable of doing and then get through some of the obstacles that they faced.I set up New-U Coaching just over three years ago with a simple intention - to change every life in Scotland for the better.  I want to show people in Scotland what they are capable of and how, if they take simple steps, they can do amazing things.  I often hear people talk about a “low level of confidence” in Scotland.  We are a nation of people that have the ability to do amazing things, but if we keep getting told that our confidence is low, we might just keep believing it.   We must focus on our potential, the opportunities we have to do incredible things.   There are always things to do.  We just need to do the right ones in the right way to make our lives happier, more prosperous and more fulfilling. We have been working more and more with some incredible people who have a tough job trying to support those people in Scotland most in need of help.  Whether young people not in education, employment and training, or trainers forging ahead with the employability agenda I have been amazed at the ability of people to reach deep into their reserves and face some of the most heart-rendering experiences I have heard.  New-U is at the forefront of using life coaching to develop the people in the organisations that play such a crucial role in developing the people of Scotland.  It is one of my personal goals to take coaching to those that might otherwise not be included and could benefit the most. We now work within Children and Family departments, Education, Charities and public service organisations in building life coaching skills into their teams and developing their capacity to help more people, more quickly and more effectively.Shortly after setting up New-U, I developed our leadership coaching model and delivered our first piece of corporate work, coaching senior managers to improve motivation, communication and teamwork.  One of my beliefs is the excitement of the unknown.  You can fear risk or embrace it and when I set up the business, all I could see was the amazing future ahead.  In a short period of time New-U Coaching has grown to be the largest coaching organisation in Scotland, and I am really proud to say the only one in Scotland accredited by the world leading International Coach Federation.  Our work in helping develop some of the most dynamic and visionary leaders has been a large part of our success.  We re-ignite the “Corporate Soul” within organisations.  The corporate soul is the direction, value and belief of the company.  It links directly to the behaviours that people exert within the organisation, the vision of the leadership and the responsibility of the organisation to its people, stakeholders and community.  The corporate soul joins together all these parts to understand and re-engage the purpose of the organisation. One of the great parts of my job is working with people.  It can be an old cliché to some, but I have the privilege of working with some fascinating, inspiring, determined people who want to see real change and prosperity in their lives and the lives of others.  One of the great things I find almost universally amongst our clients is that there is recognition that personal development is a necessary part of change.  It is well known that change is taking place at an ever-increasing rate, but what we are not all able to do is manage and adapt quickly enough.  The nature of our lives is that change is a constant and that we will have to be able to prioritise, order and deliver the best we can.  I have a simple method to help coach yourself and lead yourself to greater success, if you can apply it every day.  It is simply this:

Things will happen.  It is not what happens that will affect your success, but how you deal with it, how you respond.  If you deal with something in a positive way, you will be a positive person and the event will become a positive one regardless of how it was initially perceived.

New-U Coaching is one of Europe’s most successful coaching organisations, based in Glasgow and Edinburgh.  If you would like to find out more information, please call Gillian on 0131 272 2722 or email: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
