J & S Seddon has received a major accolade for its commitment to staff. The building, painting and maintenance company secured the Leadership In People Award, at the Constructing Excellence Awards, held at the ICC in Birmingham.
Arranged by West Midlands Centre For Constructing Excellence (WMCCE) – an organisation set up with support from Advantage West Midlands and the EU to improve the capabilities and competitiveness of construction companies across the region – the event was held at the ICC in Birrmingham. J & S Seddon secured the accolade for its long-standing commitment to its people and the positive impact on the social, economic and educational performance in the region. A spokesman from WMCCE said: “J & S Seddon has demonstrated through practical application and investment that its actions have resulted in an enhanced reputation, high moral and low staff turnover. “The organisation demonstrated clear benefits from the positive integration of the principles of Investors In People within the company.” Stuart Seddon, chairman of J & S Seddon, received the accolade. He said: “We were delighted to achieve this award.” J & S Seddon achieved the Investor In People standard in 1999. In 2007 alone, it invested more than £2 million in training its workforce. For more than 40 years, the company has operated a dedicated apprentice scheme, producing on average 30 skilled workers a year and last year, Seddon opened a £1 million training centre of excellence at its Stoke-on-Trent headquarters. There are 100 apprentices currently with Seddon, 30 in their third year, 41 in their second and 29 in their first. 43 members of staff are also undertaking professional qualifications, including degrees and HNCs in quantity surveying, as well as accounting, procurement and management studies. The training policy brings stability and a framework to develop the operations of the company. A culture of learning is created and improvements in work quality achieved. Safety and motivation are evident. The involvement of employees is maximised. This is reflected by Seddon’s CHURN factor, currently standing at around five per cent, one of the lowest in the industry. In October 2007, J & S Seddon reached the finals in The Contract Journal’s Construction Industry Awards, training category. In 2006, it secured the Training Achievement Accolade in the Construction News Quality in Construction Awards, backed by the then DTI and sponsored the CITB. In this contest judges described J & S Seddon as ‘a great example of ethical trading in the industry.’ Notes To Editors J & S Seddon includes Seddon Painting, Seddon Building, Seddon Maintenance and 4m flooring uk Limited. It has a workforce in excess of 1,000 people. The company has its headquarters in Stoke-on-Trent. J & S Seddon Limited is a Seddon Group Limited company, one of Britain’s major privately owned construction companies, with an annual turnover in excess of £240 million and employing 1,700 people.
