USA—JULY 06, 2007— There is a good chance that Alex Cove's debut novel is unlike any you've ever read. The title of the book offers a descriptive glimpse inside - the empty book. It is literally empty. Not entirely empty, but empty enough to notice. It has a beginning, a middle, and an end. The rest of the book is... well, empty. Blank. White-space. Strangely enough, it commands your attention. You want to know the rest. You want to read what isn't there in order to make it all make sense.
The question that is probably on your mind: why? The empty book was published to see if a book with almost no words can become a bestseller. Sure, it manages to tell a story, but it's what's missing that will make people want to buy this one-of-a-kind book.
Is this possible? Sure. The empty book is, after all, a book. And bestsellers lists are based on sales, right? Then why not?
The real question is will people purchase a book that can be read in less than one minute. If they do, the author wants to reward them by revealing some unknowns at certain levels of book sales. This is the empty book challenge. If enough books are sold, the author will reveal the following:
* type of drink mentioned in the last chapter (1,000 books) * the main character of the empty book (10,000 books) * his true identity (100,000 books) * contents of the silver case (1,000,000 books)
Silver case? Did we forget to mention the mysterious case on the front cover of the empty book? Evidently, the contents of this case play an important role in the untold story of the empty book.
