A child of the Holocaust with a different tale to tell

From The Holocaust To The Highlands is a beautifully written true story giving an account of a young Jewish boy who escaped from Nazi occupied Europe and found sanctuary with his family in the Scottish highlands. Walter Kress’s Father was taken from his home in Vienna and imprisoned at Dachau concentration camp. Miraculously he managed to escape and flee to Great Britain with his family. The family eventually arrived penniless and exhausted in Aberdeen where the children of the family were looked after by the local folk after Walter’s father had been interred because of his Austrian nationality. Walter Kress wrote his amazing auto-biography to let people see another aspect of those terrible times, an aspect that is often overlooked. His book is not a survivor’s eye-witness account of the inhuman suffering and cruelty that those poor people had to endure; it is a heart-warming tale of how he was not only given love and support by the Scottish people he was brought up and moulded in the fashion of a true Scot.

Michael Molden—the founder of Cauliay Publishing which recently published the book—said, “When I first read the manuscript I was completely moved by it, besides being engrossed in the wonderful story with its tales of seafaring adventure it occurred to me that I was also reading something of quite important historical value. It was an aspect of the Holocaust which I for one had never heard of. Yes, like everyone else I had heard of and read about those terrible death camps, but I had no idea that there were many Jewish people who were saved simply by the kindness of ordinary folk. I suppose one could even go on to say that people like the citizens of Aberdeen could in many ways be credited with playing an important part in the creation of Isreal as we know it today. Cauliay Publishing was founded to provide a voice for the unique and the unusual, to seek out the extraordinary and to give opportunities to people of all backgrounds. Walter Kress is a larger-than-life character with a unique style, in short he is an ordinary man who has lived an extraordinary life and he tells his story without any frills; that approach will appeal to many people.”

Walter Kress is now in his seventies and lives with his wife in Palmers Green London. If any members of the media would like to talk to Mr Kress about his book or indeed any other aspect of his remarkable life he can be contacted on 02088-077700.
Cauliay Publishing would also be pleased to answer any media questions. Contact Michael Molden on 07875-731241 or by email at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
