Various big names in Indian automobile industry have come together, to find a sustainable source for fuel supply. Automobile rivals in India are joining hands to find a source to maintain sustainable supply of fuel. Big names such as Eicher Motors, Ashok Leyland, Mahindra & Mahindra, Bajaj Auto, and Tata Motors have come together under SIAM’s (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers) aegis. They have assembled for participating in the “first of its kind” project for creating a right mix of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) and hydrogen. By doing so the consortium intends to make vehicles run on fuel mix.
Consistent research and development endeavors will likely yield dividends with fuel cells emerging as a preferred distributed-generation technology. The focus of current R&D attempts is to attain technological breakthroughs that’ll result in improved product offerings that too at competitive prices.
Vehicle makers across the world are seeking ways of using hydrogen-fuel in newer products, however this project looks for developing CNG hydrogen mixture known as “Hithane” to be used in existing fleet of vehicles with least modifications in their engine & its components.
Hithane reduces the country’s dependence upon foreign oil. Plus it also diminishes the emissions of nitrous oxide (NOX), thereby helping it achieve enhanced fuel efficiency.
As per a RNCOS’ latest report on "Market for Fuel Cell Technology (2006-2007)", Fuel cells are likely to play a crucial role in global energy industry in near future owing to their high- efficiency and eco-friendly nature. In contrast, threats over fuel supply’s security coupled with the increasing concern for emission control and air pollution are the factors that help strengthen the need for fuel cells as an accepted form of distributed-generation technology.
