Esendex embraces summer of cycling
As the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, launches the capital’s Summer of Cycling with Sky Sports, Nottingham-based Esendex is also encouraging its workforce to take to their bikes to make good on its promise to minimise, and ultimately erase, the company’s carbon footprint. SMS communications specialist, Esendex participates in the Government’s Cycle To Work scheme, which has enabled several members of staff to purchase bikes cost-effectively and get cycling to work. Joint MD’s Julian Hucker and Adam Bird are both keen cyclists and also participate in triathlons. In a bid to motivate others and show people that it can be done, both Julian and Adam recently cycled to work from Bedford to Nottingham, covering an impressive 102 miles in eight hours. “As a technology company, we are more aware than most of our impact on the environment,” comments Julian. “Wherever possible, our employees are encouraged to commute to work by public transport, to car-share, walk or cycle. The Cycle To Work scheme has really helped promote our environmental policies internally and no-one has the excuse now of not being able to afford their own bike!” “With offices in a number of countries, however, some air travel is inevitable,” continues Julian. “Since July 2007, we have subscribed to the Carbon Offset options proposed by each airline, which we know is not perfect, but we hope will be improved in the coming years.” To help reduce the amount of air travel required, Esendex has invested in revolutionary remote working and video conferencing technology. Adam explains, “We will continue to invest in techniques and technologies that help us reduce our carbon impact and energy consumption wherever possible. Since 2007, all new PCs and servers have been specified to minimise energy consumption and offices have energy efficient lighting and other devices wherever possible.” The “You’re better off by bike” campaign aims to encourage existing cyclists to use their bikes more regularly, and promote cycling to the estimated 1.1 million Londoners who have access to bikes but don’t use them.
