Leaks, damage, illegal tapping and sabotage to pipelines is a world wide problem costing pipeline operators millions per year in disruption and lost production, not to mention loss of life that often occurs. Westminster's unique solution to the problem is to provide a dual purpose Pipeline Security & Leak Detection system utilising a single fibre-optic cable run adjacent to the pipeline. This system allows the detection of illegal tapping or sabotage of the pipeline, whilst also providing the benefit of real-time monitoring against any ruptures or leaks. The system requires no power or electronics to be installed in the field and simply involves the installation of a fibre optic cable parallel to the pipeline. Where an existing communication fibre is already in existence that can usually be utilised, which allows for a rapid and very cost effective solution. The system will detect third party interference and pinpoint the location to within a few metres anywhere along the pipeline regardless of distance. The system is 100% intrinsically safe, immune to RFI and EMF interference, requires no analysers or power supply units to be installed within the field and can cover up to 80km from a singe control point. The systems can be configured to protect, surface pipelines, buried pipelines and sub aqua pipelines in a single integrated solution. Multiple controllers can be networked together to monitor pipelines thousands of kilometres in length. Additional benefits of the system are that spare cores in the system can be used to carry client’s data and communications between pumping stations and the unique design allows surveillance cameras or other security devices to be installed in remote areas and signalled back to Control & Command centres simply by connecting to the detection fibre. In addition the system is capable of tracking Pipeline Inspection Gauge (Pig) units as they travel through the pipes and provide pinpoint location of any unit which may become stuck – saving operators a great deal of time and effort in opening pipes to find it.
