To counter increasing government intrusion into private lifestyles, 11 organizations from various countries have founded an umbrella organization, the "International Coalition against rohibition" (ICAP). "In the past, those seeking to restrict adult use of tobacco, alcohol, and even the enjoyment of sweet or fatty foods have worked internationally against a fragmented and largely ineffective opposition", says John Gray (Wales), one of the directors-elect. "This will now change". Last Saturday, delegates from pro-choice movements such as internationally active FORCES and UK-based Freedom2Choose signed the so-called "Aldebaran Treaty" to establish close cooperation between national groups. Countries represented by the signatories of ICAP's governing document include: England, Scotland, Wales, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Italy, America and Canada. Their summit took place in a vintage sailing ship on the Dutch Ijsselmeer Lake. The first major project of the new Coalition will be an International Conference on the topic of smoking bans later this year or in the beginning of 2009. "As representatives of European and transatlantic nations and organisations we are now bound in solidarity against smoking bans and the so many other damaging prohibitions that are lucrative and fashionable in today's world of scientific fraud and political stupidity. We have come together to fight the growing tendency to treat adults as children by removing their freedom of choice in choosing how to live and enjoy their lives and lifestyles", declares Bill Gibson, director-elect of ICAP. |
