The New 2008 Ford Edge
The new Ford Edge is a crossover utility vehicle. This is an increasingly important market sector, particularly since the media frenzy over rising petrol prices. The new Ford Edge has the 3.5 litre V-6 engine that shares its basic dual overhead camshaft layout with the 3.0 litre used in the Fusion, Freestyle and Five Hundred. With a displacement of 3496cc the engine produces 265 bhp and 250 lb ft of torque, coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission and available as either a 2-wheel drive or an all-wheel drive vehicle. The Edge has a unibody construction opposed to a traditional SUV body on frame arrangement. This gives the Edge a more rigid structure with better handling and a better ride. The Edge has power assisted rack and pinion steering and all-round antilock brakes. Standard fit are 17” aluminium wheels but the SEL and SEL Plus versions are available with two styles of 18” wheels. Ford’s Advance Trac stability control is standard as are dual stage frontal air bags, seat mounted side airbags and side curtain airbags with roll over detection. The Edge is a spacious 5 seater with plenty of front and rear leg room, rear reclining seats are useful and the vehicle features a large luggage area with 32 cubic feet available behind the rear seats, the seats fold flat and slide forward, there is the option of power operation for the folding seats. The quality of the materials used are very high and the fit and finish are impressive. There are some 6 cupholders, at various points in the vehicle as well as juice box holders in the rear door compartments and a large centre console for additional items. If you need auxiliary power the vehicle has 4 power points and an MP3 audio jack.
The Edge is available with either 2 or all-wheel-drive and 3 trim levels. The base SE comes well equipped with power windows, mirrors and locks with remote key less entry and a telescoping steering wheel and a cloth interior. The SEL adds chrome tipped exhausts, a leather steering wheel and gear shifter, 6-disc CD audio and MP3 and automatic headlamps. The top of the range SEL Plus has leather, heated seats, dual zone climate control, steering wheel climate controls, fold flat front seat and second row remote power release, other options include satellite radio, DVD rear entertainment centre, reverse parking sensors, navigation system incorporated into a premium sound system and a large sun/moon roof.
The Edge is very car like and the new 3.5 V-6 engine is refined and performs well covering the 0-60 mph sprint in around 7 seconds.
If you are looking to down-size but still want the high quality and luxury of a larger SUV then the Edge is certainly a vehicle you should put on your shopping list.
