Sprowston Parish Council in Norfolk have beaten off competition from playgrounds around the world to win the 2007 International Green Playground Award. This is the commercial playground industry’s only award for environmental design, and is presented to the scheme installed during 2007 that demonstrated the very best in environmentally sensitive playground design and development.  Play schemes from territories around the world excepting USA and Canada were eligible and entries were received from as far afield as South America, Asia and Europe.  The award plaque, which is also made out of recycled materials, was presented to June Hunt, Clerk for Sprowston Parish Council by Councillor Dewgarde, vice chairman of  the Parish Council. The original brief called for a playground design that would blend in with the surroundings and be sympathetic to the environment. The centerpiece of the play area is a BigToys® Traveler unit supplied by Watford-based Monster Play Systems which not only provides 12 different challenging activities for young people, but its eco-friendly green and grey finish also makes it aesthetically pleasing. This play centre is manufactured with a high content of recycled and PVC free materials, which resulted in more than 13,532 recycled plastic milk containers and 450 kilos of reclaimed scrap steel being diverted from landfill sites.   June Hunt, Clerk for Sprowston  Parish Council was delighted to win the award. “This area backs onto open fields, and our main concern from the start was to make sure that the play area wasn’t garish, but was sympathetic to the location. We also wanted to install equipment that would be robust and low maintenance.  The use of recycled metal, wood and plastics was ideal, and the grey and green colour scheme means it really does harmonise with the skyline and the surrounding fields. The real proof of the success is that the new play area is very popular with young people of all ages, but it also shows that providing the best services to our community can be accomplished without detriment to the environment.”  Paul Quinn, managing director of Monster Play added, "This really was a team effort with Mark using his expertise to ensure that Sprowston were able to transform their ideas into reality. For Sprowston to be chosen as the most environmentally sensitive project outside of the USA, is a great achievement and shows the council's concern for the community has been recognised." E n d s May 2008
