Charity gig is called off after council red tape intervenes
London, 2008 – London band Apples For Everyone thought everything would be straightforward when they chose to perform a gig in the village of Gunthorpe to raise money for Coastal Concern, the charity aiming to keep the village of Happisburgh on the map.The cliffs at Happisburgh on the North Norfolk coast have been eroding at an average rate of 12 metres per year. The wooden sea defences built in the late 1950s have been falling into disrepair, and as a result large chunks of the sandy cliffs regularly disappear into the sea; in the last 15 years over 25 properties have been lost. Happisburgh is home to over 850 people, with 18 listed buildings including a 12th Century church and Britain’s only privately maintained lighthouse at risk. In March 2007 limited works were carried out by North Norfolk District Council to help sustain the coast for the near future, however a more sustainable long term solution is needed. The band Apples For Everyone decided to escape the confines of London for a week’s songwriting in the stunning rural environs of Gunthorpe. Village residents suggested the band play a gig at the end of the week, and the band saw it as a great opportunity to raise money for the Happisburgh Campaign.“A current crowd favourite is a song I dedicated to the cause, called ‘Happisburgh Address’” notes band guitarist Jack Gobsmob. “It’s important to give a platform to things you believe in.”The band were hoping to perform a charity gig at Gunthorpe village hall on Friday 6th June, but were prevented from doing so by local council and police red tape. The council claimed that the band submitted their claim for an entertainments license too late, and refused to make any concessions to the fact that the gig was on a very small scale, and raising money for a valuable local charity.“The residents of Gunthorpe and Happisburgh were looking forward to us playing” argued vocalist and songwriter Dave Pickering. “It’s frustrating that council bureaucracy has prevented us from raising extra money for the charity. But we’re not going to let it get us down, and we plan to raise money from future performances.”###Apples For Everyone are a 14 piece folk punk band based in London and Surrey.
