Managed service specialist e-know.net has announced it has added another law firm to its fast-growing professional services client list. Leading south-west practice Wolferstans has contracted with the provider to supply its complete IT infrastructure including communications, networking and software. The deal is significant in that it will see the first hosted delivery of the dna* practice management system from LexisNexis Axxia. e-know.net has already provided a test environment for the new application and with trials and training well underway, a go-live date is scheduled for the end of July. Other core applications to be hosted included Microsoft Exchange, Office, SharePoint and digital dictation, with e-know.net supporting some 130 users on a 24/7 basis. The major IT project forms part of a wider strategic review headed up by legal business development consultancy, Inpractice. Inpractice consultant Allan Carton, who has taken Wolferstans through the evaluation, selection, contracting and early stages of implementation phases so far in his role as interim Practice Director, explains the rationale for moving to a managed service platform: “Wolferstans have decided that their future strategy for growing their business will see them focus on managing client and customer relationships more effectively. IT is absolutely central to this ambition, with dna* core to the creation of a highly collaborative working environment. But it’s a big challenge - the physical organisation and management, the resources, the investment, the expertise needed to build and maintain a leading-edge infrastructure; these would all place heavy operational and financial demands on a firm that wants to focus on supporting lawyers to work and communicate as effectively and productively as possible with clients, business partners and prospects. By making e-know.net our de facto IT department, we have that burden lifted – simultaneously freeing up Wolferstans personnel to address added-value areas such as development of workflows and CRM systems. At a stroke, we have the right infrastructure in place, a wealth of expertise on tap and the potential to develop at whatever pace suits – all for a fixed price on a transparent per person per month pricing model. This flexibility will facilitate future office moves while also encouraging a greater degree of home and mobile working. The security and disaster recovery capability inherent in the hosted solution were also influential factors in our choice of platform.” Nigel Redwood, e-know.net’s managing director, believes managed service is becoming an increasingly attractive choice for mid-market law firms. “If you look at what our law firm clients say, there is real unanimity on one issue: that’s the need to home in on core competencies and reduce some of the organisational and technological complexity that can impede progress. They all want to leverage IT to the full but prefer to use external experts to achieve that while they concentrate on the business of law. For a certain size of practice, such an approach is undeniably more cost-effective, more expedient and more capable of sustaining a competitive IT infrastructure than an internally resourced solution. Now that there is a growing confidence in not just the concept but in the new generation of stable, secure service providers, we expect to see more firms making the switch.” www.e-know.net
