Following reports that show more species of British wildlife are endangered than ever before, Britain’s birds and mammals are set to receive a helping hand. Pets at Home, the UK’s largest pet care retailer, is encouraging customers to combine caring for their own pets with the needs of their wild cousins. Steve Fairburn, Pets at Home’s resident Wildlife Expert has identified four easy ways in which people can help wildlife as they approach Springtime. 1. Help save our hedgehogs. Steve says: “The hedgehogs of Britain are dying out at a rate of about a fifth of the population every four years. By 2025, they may be gone. Our hedgehog population has declined by 50% in the last 15 years. Their survival relies on our goodwill. Providing food and shelter for breeding will help increase their numbers. Steve recommends: Spikes Hedgehog Crunch at £4.99 for 900g and the Spikes Hedgehog Relish at 59p.
2. Feed the birds while dog-walking. Steve says: “Many birds eat up to half their body weight each day, especially during the chillier months. Feeding can be a rewarding and easily done activity to do even while walking your dog. Steve recommends: Pockets packs of bird food from 59p and swan and duck seed £1.29 for 150g. 3. Create a pond Steve says: “One of the best things people can do to encourage and help wildlife is to create a pond. Ponds should have a sloping side to let animals like frogs to get in and out easily. Even an upturned bin lid or a washing bowl will make a difference. Ponds are a great habitat for insects. Anything that encourages insects is beneficial as they are an important food source for many other creatures.” 4. Get a birdhouse Steve says: “Extra care should be taken to feed the birds during Spring. This will help to improve breeding success of their offspring. Birds that are in good condition are likely to produce more young and be able to feed them successfully. Getting a birdhouse is an easy way of doing this and hugely rewarding.” Steve recommends: Build Your Own Bird Table Top, £7.99 or Premium Box for £11.99
Steve concludes: “Wildlife is decreasing rapidly in UK gardens. Because gardens are becoming so manicured these days, often animals and birds are struggling for food and are at considerable risk” “We know pet owners will be keen extend the great British notion of being an animal lover further and help endangered wildlife this Spring, especially as every little bit of effort will help provide a properous home for wildlife”
