Millions of Britain's family pet owners are bracing themselves for an explosion of fleas this weekend as temperatures are predicted to soar in many parts of the country by Saturday. Homes across the country are in danger of being overrun with fleas, bringing misery and health risks for pets and their owners, according to Britain’s leading pet shop retailer, Pets at Home.
As families and their pets get out and enjoy the sunshine, unwelcome visitors in the form of fleas may be taking over their homes. Just one single female flea would be responsible for over 100,000 fleas appearing within 16 weeks if left untreated.
And as 95% of fleas live in the home and not on the pet, it means that when you see fleas on your cat or dog or even the animal scratching, the chances are that there will be many thousands more in the home at various stages of development hidden in carpets, soft furnishings and pet bedding.
This not only causes great discomfort for animals but puts children and adults at risk from flea bites and potentially contracting tape worm and other blood-borne diseases.
Catriona Marshall from at Pets at Home says: “We’ve noticed a big upsurge this week from pet owners desperate to rid their homes and animals of fleas, with a big demand for some of the leading treatment products, which really do work wonders in controlling and eliminating fleas. I think the combination of a mild winter and this week’s hot spell has combined to mean that the rise in the flea population has started very early this year”.
Pets at Home offer great products, tips and advice to keep you and your pet happy and harmonious.
