Car insurance customers will be interested to learn that diesel prices in particular are having an impact on the cars people are choosing to buy.

Figures released today show an increase in the sale of smaller cars such as the Ford Fiesta, Fiat Grande Punto, Renault Clio and Vauxhall Corsa.

The research also shows that more people are opting for petrol rather than diesel cars with six times as many people buying a petrol version of the Vauxhall Corsa at Motorpoint than the diesel version.

David Shelton, managing director of Motorpoint, said: "While the credit crunch has impacted on the economy, our sales figures show that people are becoming ever more conscious of fuel consumption."

Last week, the chairman of the Association of Car Fleet Operators (ACFO) Julie Jenner, announced that the record fuel prices were making fleet operators more conscious of the vehicles they bought.

Ms Jenner was speaking at the ACFO's annual general meeting and conference in Milton Keynes and said that the increase in fuel costs had made fleet operators "more aware than ever before of the implications of the vehicles they run".

The average price of petrol broke through the £5 per gallon mark for the first time at the end of April.

The Petrol Retailers Association predicts that average prices could rise by another five pence by this weekend, reports the BBC.

A litre of unleaded petrol currently costs 113.01 pence while a litre of diesel is 124.87 pence.
