Melita landed a principal role in the cult movie two years ago alongside Samantha Morton, Denis Lavant and Anita Pallenberg. For the first time, Melita spoke to Rachel Polydorou in an exclusive behind the scenes interview on Harmony Korines movie gem
Cinema City in Norwich is to be host to one of Norfolk's most celebrated actress's, Melita Morgan. The art house cinema, located in St. Andrew’s Street is to roll out the red carpet for a celebrity guest list to view Harmony Korine's cinematic masterpiece 'Mister Lonely'
I have interviewed many celebrities over the years and I assumed I knew what to expect from someone that was relishing global media attention, I was pleasantly surprised to say the least. On arriving at her Norfolk home the Mother of three greeted me wearing a scruffy woollen jumper complete with a gardening fork and wind blown golden hair. "Oh, come on in" she exclaimed in her native Norwich accent "I have been expecting you, make yourself at home, I was just doing a bit in the garden" After she had put the kettle on for a cup of tea we settled down to have a chat.
The first obvious question I asked Melita was about the man himself, What was it like working with the great Korine and was he what she expected? She thought for a while and smiled
"It was a joy to work with such a diverse and full circumference 'art head' such as Korine, however what amazes me the most is the major impact on my own life his fans have placed upon me, as they have categorised me in this 'cult vault' that is called Harmony Korine. I feel I have won a piece of movie cult history just by having been chosen by Korine. The phrase, cult movie director and humble girl from Norfolk just doesn't seem to pair up but some how, it does"
As well as working with a movie mastermind Harmony Korine, Melita was thrown into a labyrinth of household movie names including Samantha Morton, what was it like working with her?
"Samantha is passionate about her work and a true perfectionist. I learnt a great deal about the art of acting in a big movie, she was a very caring person and protective to my needs on set. For example during a scene involving being in a mud bath we were exposed to extremely cold conditions. When Sam realised I didn't have adequate heating on our return from filming she demanded I had another heater, I will never forget that"
I was intrigued to find out who was Melita's favourite man on set, she gave me the feeling that she liked all of them but I enticed her to speak about one that may have made a lasting impression on her. Melita winked while she sipped her tea and replied
"James Hagger because he was so thoughtful with everybody's needs and he's bloody good looking as well" she laughed "As a single woman I guess that's the perk of the job"
On any Movie set there's likely to be something that an actress finds difficult, I asked Melita which she thought was the toughest moment during filming
"The toughest moment was a scene involving a mimicked shooting of sheep. I found it emotionally distressing because it rekindled personal painful memories and feelings. I kept getting visions of animals being slaughtered, I'm very passionate about animal rights in general. The fact that my 20 year old dog was stolen and returned to me just before setting off for filming Mister Lonely, didn't help the matter. However, it increased my facial expression and feeling in my acting for that particular scene. I actually felt I lived that part of the movie instead of acting it"
There are inevitable changes that come with any global recognition, not just in movies. I asked Melita if the attention received because of the movie affected people around her and what impact it may have had concerning her personal life.
"No, I'm still as humble as when I was wearing my ridding britches full time as a profession. In fact movie notoriety has made me even more humble and made me appreciate everyday things and situations more so. The people closest to me haven't really changed and are touched that I remain the same. I feel that certain individuals have used my success to vent their past grudges against me but I'm flattered to have created a handful of impostors and impersonators. I feel sad that there are persons that project my actual movie character in real life"
There was an intimate love scene that was leaked before the movie release involving Madonna (Melita Morgan) and Charlie Chaplin (Denis Lavant) When we viewed the screening of Mister Lonely at the BFI Film Festival in London it was rather disappointing that we didn't see the much publicised love encounter. I asked Melita why she thinks it wasn't featured.
"Korine told me, during editing the movie, that the steamy scene had to be cut because it was the only scene where my hair was down and although it was considered a classic sex scene, it was decided I looked too much like Samantha Morton's character. It was believed that may confuse the audience as I was Chaplins mistress and Samantha's character was his wife"
I couldn't resist asking Melita to describe the love scene that everyone's talking about. She calmly placed her cup of tea on a nearby table as if she knew I wasn't going to proceed with the interview unless I had at least a clue what the sexy out take was all about.
"I don't want to give too much away because I believe the clip may be featured in the Making of Mister Lonely DVD release. Imagine pure lust and sex for sex itself crossed between two wild animals in the woods, joined with flesh eating Scottish midges and coupled with highly vocal sensual pleasure donned in yellow wellies. It truly is one of those memorable sexy cinematic moments that people talk about for years. I wouldn't be surprised if Korine didn't have film in the camera because he was full of unexpected surprises himself, he probably did it to relax me on my first day on set, I hadn't even unpacked my siutcase"
The final question had to be about Melita's continuous efforts to promote acting and young filmmakers in her region. It's refreshing to see someone with so much International exposure keeping so passionately close to their roots. It's come as no surprise that a Gala Premiere screening of Mister Lonely has been organised by Melita herself. With the recent blessing from Tartan Films in association with Cinema City to host the celebrity event there's no stopping the remarkable phenomenon that is, Melita Morgan. I concluded a delightful afternoon by asking her what the gala premiere screening of Mister Lonely at Cinema City meant to her
"It means everything to me, my dreams of appearing in a movie were born in Norwich. This event is a perfect platform to promote the vast spectrum of talent and quality art venues in our region. I am keen to develop art projects and film making in Norfolk. It's very important to me that future talent is given the opportunity to express their creativity. In order for this to happen the recourses that are on offer must continue to flourish themselves. The very least I feel I can do is show an interest but would like to be involved and do so much more"
There is a chance to meet Melita Morgan on the 8th of May at Cinema City in Norwich for a public screening of Mister Lonely, where the audience will have a rare opportunity to ask questions after screening.
