From London to Bangkok, from Taiwan to California, leading music festivals around the world will feature the orchestral music of Avner Dorman, and several chamber music groups will present Avner Dorman's compositions on tour. A list of all summer performances follows at the end of this press release.
Variations Without A Theme at the Cabrillo Festival in CaliforniaMarin Aslop conducts the West Coast premiere of Variations Without a Theme at the Grand Finale performances of this renowned contemporary music festival on August 10, 2008 at 4 PM and 8 PM, at the Mission San Juan Bautista in Santa Cruz, California. Variations Without a Theme received its world premiere by Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in 2003 and was heard last season at the Nashville Symphony under the baton of Asher Fisch. It is described as “sophisticated music that cleverly explores both Eastern and Western sonic worlds” and “calls to mind the bustle of an Arab bazaar”. Frozen in Time at the Schleswig-Holstein Festival in GermanyJohn Axelrod leads soloist Martin Grubinger and the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra in Avner Dorman's popular percussion concerto, Frozen in Time on August 15, 2008 at 8:00 PM , at The Musik und Kogresshalle in Lübeck, Germany. The concerto received its world premiere in December 2007 by Martin Grubinger and the Hamburg Philharmonic led by Simone Young and was performed in January 2008 at the Munich Philharmonic. The title refers to imaginary snapshots of the Earth's geological development from prehistoric times to the present day. Each movement (Indoafrica, Eurasia and The Americas) imagines the music of a large prehistoric continent at a certain point in time. Ellef Symphony at the Indianapolis Symphony in IndianaAsher Fisch leads the Indianapolis Symphony in the U.S. premiere of Ellef Symphony on June 6, 2008 at 8:00PM and on June 7, 2008 at 5:30 PM at Hilbert Circle Theatre in Indianapolis. “Ellef” means millennium in Hebrew and was written in the year 2000, when Avner Dorman was 25 years old. The first three parts of Ellef Symphony are inspired by Jewish poetry of the second millennium (1000-2000), each concerned with a different aspect of war. The fourth part represents the third millennium and the composer's aspirations that poetry of the third millennium will not have to deal with wars. The symphony was premiered in 2000 in Berlin and received Israel's prestigious Prime Minister's Award as well as ACUM's Golden Feather Award. Virtuoso Violinist Sayaka Shoji premieres Violin Sonata in CroatiaVirtuoso violinist Sayaka Shoji premieres Sonata No. 2 for Violin and Piano on September 27, 2008 in Sabor, Croatia, with Itamar Golan at the piano. This piece was commissioned by Ms. Shoji for her 2008-2009 world tour and will be featured in concerts at Suntory Hall in Tokyo and Carnegie Hall in New York City.PercaDu in ThailandPercaDu will present the Asian premiere of Spices, Perfumes, Toxins! with the Thailand Philharmonic led by conductor Gudni Emilsson on July 18-19, 2008 in Bangkok, Thailand. Later in the 2008-09 season, Zubin Mehta, Percadu and the New York Philharmonic will perform this double-percussion concerto at Avery Fisher Hall. This summer, PercaDu also will perform Dorman's music at the Percussion Festival in Taiwan and in the UK, Switzerland, Spain and Israel. “Avner Dorman leaves a strong mark in the Israeli music scene here and now. His music is the most original, unique, and of the highest quality to have been played by our orchestras in the past season. Dorman is a contemporary Israeli composer that grew up in a musical family and was enchanted by all the sounds of musical space around him – of both concert and popular music. His works today demonstrate his personal statement within the realm of these influences, which serve as aesthetic models rather than a source for imitation. “ (Ora Binur, Ma’ariv Newspaper)Praised as a "fresh, young voice, worth following" (Gramophone Magazine), Avner Dorman has quickly risen to become one of Israel's most successful and renowned composers. At the age of 25, he became the youngest composer to win Israel's prestigious Prime Minister's Award for his Ellef Symphony, and that same year he was awarded the Golden Feather Award from ACUM (the Israeli Society of Composers and Publishers). Since coming to the United States, Dorman received several international awards from ASCAP, ACUM, and the Asian Composers League. Dorman's unique approach to rhythm and timbre has attracted some of the world's leading conductors, including Zubin Mehta, Asher Fisch, and Simone Young to bring his music to audiences of the Israel Philharmonic, the Munich Philharmonic, Nashville Symphony, and the Hamburg Philharmonic, among others. Born in 1975, Avner Dorman completed his Doctoral degree as a C.V. Starr fellow at the Juilliard School where he studied with John Corigliano and his Master's degree at Tel Aviv University where he majored in music, musicology, and physics and studied with former Soviet composer Josef Bardanashvili. Dorman was a composition fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center and served as composer in residence for The Israel Camerata from 2001 through 2003.
